European Bike Express

European Bike Express is in my opinion one of the only hassle free methods of getting to  destinations  in  France, and  certainly the safest for your precious bike. The service has close  links  with  the  CTC  and runs  luxury  air-conditioned coaches with fully reclining seats, with  masses  of  leg room,  hot  food  onboard,  w.c, and a lounge area downstairs. The bikes are carried on a purpose made trailer  (see  picture)  and  are  held  steady  by special racks.  They run three separate routes through France and it is possible to drop off at  any  of  the  designated  points on any route and pick up the return coach at a different point on another route.   The  normal  drop  off/pick  up  dates  are  for 17 days,  but by arrangement this can be longer or shorter.   The service is very efficient but friendly  and many cyclists (including me) use it regularly every year.
The lists below show regular routes and pickup/drop off points in UK and France/Italy/Spain

The Eurotunnel Cycle Service operates seven days a week carrying cycles on specially adapted trailers and cyclists in a spacious comfortable minibus. The minibus drives on to the train at Folkstone and drops passengers and cycles off at Coquelles. The crossing through the Channel Tunnel takes 35 minutes platform to platform. For adults and children, the fare is the same and includes the cycle. Children accompanying their parents on a child seat travel free of charge. BIKE CHARGES
Ryanair Bikes (in protective bag) carried on 'no risk' charged at 17.00
Easyjet Bikes (in protective bag) carried on 'no risk' charged at 15.00
British Airways Bikes (in protective bag) carried as part of baggage allowance
See relevant web pages for more detail on carrying cycles on flights
PLEASE NOTE
Baggage handlers are not best known for their delicacy of handling and I can personally say that I (or at least my bike ) have  suffered  from  the  experience. I would never advise taking a new or expensive bike on a flight with any airline, unless it is carried in a rigid bike box.   You  then  have  the  problem of where to store the box whilst you are touring,  and  it  also  means  you  will  have  to  return  to the UK by  the same route.
